Hemothorax means blood accumulating in the pleural space. This distinguishes it from other pleural effusions: air in the space (pneumothorax), lymphatic fluid known as chyle (chylothorax), or pus (empyema). Bleeding into the pleural cavity often follows chest trauma or thoracic surgery and leads to reduced lung expansion, with exam findings like decreased breath sounds and dullness to percussion. Imaging shows a fluid level that can layer dependently. Management centers on draining the blood with a chest tube and addressing ongoing bleeding, with surgical intervention if bleeding persists.
